Two Taverns Opening Soon In Duluth

Arena Tavern will open in the former Roadhouse Grill at the corner of Satellite Blvd. and Sugarloaf Pkwy. while Marlow's Tavern will open in the new The Shopping Center Group leased space across the street. Both will hope to attract business from the nearby Arena at Gwinnett and the many affluent neighborhoods. This will be Marlow's 6th location when it opens January 27th and the first for the Arena Tavern which was initially set to be a Hudson Grill. Repeat Atlanta!

Falcons Take Flight, Leaving Malls

The Falcons will close their two "Falcons 365" stores in Lenox Square and Perimeter Mall tomorrow, December 31. The Perimeter store on the second level of the Nordstrom wing opened in the summer of 2005, followed by the Lenox store in the Bloomingdales wing in the Fall of 2005. Neither location ever seemed to be especially busy, nor did I ever notice too many of their bags on my walks through the mall. It seems the Falcons have experienced better results with sales of merchandise via the store at the Georgia Dome as well as the recently revamped website. Repeat Atlanta!

Repeat Atlanta Receives 50,000th Visitor!

Earlier tonight, we received our 50,000th visit to the site. As we close in on our first year, we owe a big thanks to the many readers of Repeat Atlanta both in state and abroad that have made the site such a success. Sadly there has been more bad news than good of late with some favorite Atlanta establishments faltering under the pressures of the current economy. We here at Repeat Atlanta hope for a bigger and better 2009 and hope the same for all of you!

Baja Fresh and La Salsa Look To Make A Comeback In Atlanta

With new owners and a new plan for the greater metro Atlanta area, Baja Fresh and its sister chain La Salsa are gearing up to reenter the Atlanta market early next year. After closing their Sandy Springs and Alpharetta stores almost two years ago (when under Wendy's ownership), the chain in back with a vengeance and looking to compete with the likes of Chipotle and Moe's better than it did previously. Personally I've grown to love the flame grilled chicken and burritos of newcomer El Pollo Loco, but Baja Fresh sure beats Moe's and Chipotle for me. Repeat Atlanta!

New Denim Joint Pure(ly) Appears To Have Missed The Memo.

Pure Denim, a new opening in the former Nicole Miller on the first floor Neiman's Wings of Lenox Square appears to have missed the memo regarding the recession and will undoubtedly be closed in the coming months. I visited their initial store at SouthPark mall in Charlotte and was amazed at the price point of the clothing, and the fact that they were next to Belk, but that's beside the point. Selling such items as $1300 Great China Wall hoodies and $525 Robin's jeans, both items carried at Blue Genes, who filed for Chapter 11, they seem destined for the same fate. Unlike the sales at Pure, all stores are not final, expect for a closure to occur by summer. Repeat Atlanta!

Hanging By A Thread No Longer

Its seems its getting worse for small retail before it gets better. Recently DressCodes in Decatur closed as well as Veruca and Thread House in Midtown. Even national powerhouse American Apparel closed their 5th St. location adjacent to Georgia Tech. In the coming weeks, 1*FIVE*0 in west Midtown as well as DrewMatic's in Buford will close their doors. January 3rd will mark the last day for Universal Gear in Midtown. Additionally, after downsizing their space, Blue Genes in Buckhead filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, owing creditors more than $1 million, it's quite possible they won't make it far in 2009. Adrenalina's Atlanta Store Delayed Till March

Adrenalina, a new retail experience billing itself as "the extreme store" has delayed its opening at Northpoint Mall. Announced earlier this year with an initial opening of June, the store has been delayed now once again, this time the new scheduled opening is not till March 2009. The major thing that sets Adrenalina apart is their on site FlowRider. The FlowRider has never before been utilized in a retail environment and is pure genius. "The FlowRider® generates a thin sheet of water that flows over a stationary wave form. The resulting “wave-like” shape permits riders to slide down, carve a turn, and ride up the simulated wave surface." Three stores are currently open in Florida (Orlando, Tampa and Miami), with Atlanta being the first in a series of planned expansion markets. I had the opportunity to visit their first store at The Florida Mall on a recent trip to Orlando and was amazed at how cool and unique the store really is. The FlowRider is enclosed with glass walls, has an employee riding around to attract additional attention, and patrons can test out products on the system as well. Adrenalina recently upped their unsolicited takeover bid of PacSun and has asked to have a meeting with their CEO. PacSun is far larger and more established so it would surely help Adrenalina almost immediately to have a nationwide presence. Repeat Atlanta!

Another One Bites The Dust : DressCodes In Decatur

DressCodes, a SoHo like store may have been ahead of its time, but no matter the reason it was unable to make it here in Atlanta and will be closing. Located in downtown Decatur, near other boutiques, it had a cult like following for many of their rare and exclusive lines, but were unable to sustain what has been confirmed as a recession in this country. No official date, but the liquidation sale is currently in progress. Up to 95% off! Repeat Atlanta!

Universal Gear Closing Store In Midtown

Universal Gear is closing their midtown Atlanta location. After opening a few years ago, Universal Gear seemed to have been doing a good job appealing to their mainly gay male clientele in the midtown area, but with the downturn in consumer spending, the store has suffered in the sale of its core inventory. A liquidation sale is currently in progress with a wide assortment of items still in stock. They are currently scheduled to be closed as of the first week of 2009. Repeat Atlanta!

Jimmy John's Opening Soon In The Metropolis

American Signature Furniture Closing In Buckhead

American Signature Furniture's Buckhead location in Lenox Marketplace will be closing by years end. One of the first locations in the state a few years back, it appears a furniture store on the second level of a shopping center could not get people up and buying in this down economy. With liquidation sales now in progress, expect to see them closed by years end. Repeat Atlanta!

Maddio's Pizza Joint Opening Soon In Former Fu's At Toco Hills

Work is slowly progressing at the former Mama Fu's in Toco Hills to open a new concept, Maddio's Pizza Joint.  No word on why the name has already been changed from "Mattio's" to "Maddio's", but perhaps one existed already. Former Fu's and current Moe's franchisee Tony Lewis has brought on a few other former Raving Brands employees including Moe's co-founder Matt Andrew to launch the new concept. I've heard there are as many as six "owners", which seems like a lot from the start.  No word on an opening date but from the looks of it, an opening may take place sometime in January. Ocean Drive's Atlanta PEACH Magazine Fails, Closes Shop

In what might have been an expected and inevitable outcome of the poor economy, one of Atlanta's luxury magazines has ceased operations. PEACH Magazine, introduced in 2006 by Ocean Drive Media, entered a crowded market with a similar magazine, The Atlantan, entering within weeks of PEACH. The Atlantan is owned by Modern Luxury Media, and is of similar size and stature as PEACH. The two magazines competed for readers and advertisers in a market where Emmis Communications' Atlanta and Cumulus Media's Jezebel magazines had already accumulated readers and clients. PEACH Magazine's December release will be their last.

Victoria's Secret Opens New Flagship Stores At Lenox

Victoria's Secret has opened their third largest flagship store, spanning three storefronts at Lenox Square. Less than a year after an earlier remodel, the new store features a "PINK" boutique as well as the full line of lingerie, beauty and fragrance products. Other than the addition of the PINK boutique, the store looks very much the same, though there was a total renovation of the existing space and a slight addition in the back. Repeat Atlanta!

Street's of Buckhead Adds To Its Retail Lineup

Ben Carter's The Street's of Buckhead has added three upscale clothiers Brioni, Leggiardo, and Shirts & Co. by Domenico Vacca. While these are some great additions, these are not names that will garner the interest of others to join the development. Labels such as Carolina Herrera, Ermenegildo Zegna, Ted Baker and lululemon athletica would make great additions. Repeat Atlanta!

Blue Genes Downsizing?

It appears the downturn in the economy has an effect on the girls over at Blue Genes. Weeks after opening their hugely successful new concept "Green Genes", it appears they will be downsizing their Buckhead boutique from four store fronts down to two. Signs are posted on both the Green Genes and Men's doors saying they are closed for inventory, though it seems they are shifting inventory to the other two stores. Stay tuned for an update in the coming days. Repeat Atlanta!

Harold’s Closing All Stores, Finally!

Dallas-based Harold's will close all 43 stores nationwide including three in metro Atlanta. When it was announced they would move their from Lenox to Phipps, I went in to the Lenox store to have a look. Having never been in the store, I totally understand why they are now closing. Their brand seems stuck in the 90's. Nothing stuck out, it almost seemed like a Sears outlet. Having taken a portion of the former Gap at Phipps, the mall will soon have two large vacancies with the January 2009 closing of Niketown. Ruehl 925, or Martin + Osa could be possibilities, though neither has shown significant growth potential after fast starts. The other Harold's in metro Atlanta are at the Avenue's East Cobb and North Point Village, near North Point mall. Repeat Atlanta!

Mandarin Oriental Hotel Coming To Midtown, So They Say

Mandarin Oriental, rumored for years to be coming to Midtown Atlanta has apparently finalized an agreement with Atlanta based Tivoli Properties to construct their hotel / condo at 1138 Peachtree Street near the Atlanta Woman’s Club. Mandarin Oriental, a world renowned, 5 star hotel chain would be a welcome addition to the current Atlanta hotel market. (My take on this announcement is more a "believe it when I see it" hence the title) While plans of this would be property were released over a year ago, construction had not begun and talk that the project has been abandoned had increased with the credit crunch. The Mandarin, if it comes to fruition, will be the a coup for the city of Atlanta and midtown especially. Already with the Four Seasons and upcoming Loews hotel, and later the second Intercontinental, the Mandarin will further Atlanta's reputation as a destination, not just domestically, but internationally. Circuit City Files For Chapter 11, Exiting Atlanta Market

Yes, we here at Repeat Atlanta area little late on this one, we'd like to look at it another way. With Circuit City leaving the Atlanta market just as CompUSA did a few years back and Incredible Universe did many years ago, is hhgregg next? Tweeter's hifi Buys has closed a number of stores in recent years leaving it with a single store in Alpharetta. It seems as though the only electronics merchants able to survive are the behemoth that is Best Buy, BrandsMart USA and Fry's Electronics. My question, what will happen with all these vacated spaces, many in prime shopping centers? Circuit City's store in Buckhead and hifi buy's former space near SOB are both great locations, but for whom? With even more retail closures expected next year, there may be an influx of prime real estate coming available all at the same time. But with the economy being what it is, its doubtful to think any new or expanding retailer would enter or expand their Atlanta presence. It seems that we will be left with eyesores galore. Lenox May Get "Pink"er

Thomas Pink, luxury apparel and accessories manufacturer owned by LVMH, is said to be in talks to take the space vacated when Mayor's Jewelers moved to their new location. The old location is a few doors down from Gap, on the main level and across from Bloomingdale's. Thomas Pink’s main competitors include Ted Baker and Paul Smith, who both offer collections for men and women clothing and accessories. Both of the aforementioned brands do have significant followings in Atlanta but neither have retail outposts here, though both have been rumored for years.

Wolford Returns To Buckhead, This Time Phipps Plaza

Luxury hosiery and lingerie retailer Wolford is scheduled to open a 950-square-foot store at Phipps Plaza in time for the holidays in the Saks Fifth Avenue wing of Phipps Plaza. The Austrian manufacturer Wolford will be making their second go at the Atlanta market after an unsuccessful store at Lenox Square years ago. Baccarat Hotel Seems To Be DOA At SOB

With so many high end hotels planning on entering or adding to their Atlanta presence, some are bound to reduce or reschedule plans for their properties. The first casualty it seems may very well be the Baccarat Hotel from Starwood Capital. Initially set to occupy space in Ben Carter's tremendous The Streets of Buckhead development, the hotel has been removed from both the S.O.B. site as well as the Bacarrat site itself. Personally, it seems as though the soon to open St. Regis and W will add enough to the Buckhead market to keep things interesting for a while. Repeat Atlanta!

"Thumbs Up" To Rob Atherholt For Returning To Crescent Moon Decatur

After months of speculation following the Chapter 11 filing of Crescent Moon, Rob Atherholt former owner / founder has repurchased the original Decatur location of his beloved restaurant. After he sold the restaurant, new managment seemed more concerned with the bottom line than with a quality product, and poor service soon followed. The group opened an additional location at The Mall of Georgia and had plans for up to 4 more in Brookhaven, Buckhead, Downtown and Duluth but those never came to fruition. Instead, the company filed for Bankruptcy and was in a financial mess. The name itself, Crescent Moon, being a part of the litigation, Atherholt will reopen Crescent Moon in late November as a Thumbs Up Diner with its founder Lou Locricchio as a partner. The two restaurants have similar menus and Thumbs Up has an established Decatur following, as their Avondale Estates location recently closed, after not renewing their lease. Repeat Atlanta!

Wonder No More, New Date For W Buckhead Opening

As I walk by the W hotel in Buckhead construction sight on almost a daily basis, I found it hard to believe they were still opening on November 1st. It comes to no real surprise the opening has been delayed. While the uppity sales people of Needless Markup denied my entrance into the Benjamin Bixby launch event (Though I was personally invited by Andre himself) , I was lucky enough to run into Mit Shah, C.E.O. of Noble Investments and got a few of my questions answered. While the opening has been delayed, it is only so that they can make the new Whiskey Blue the best it can be! Many of the guest rooms are already complete and the interior lobby area is coming along nicely. The new opening date is November 17th. Repeat Atlanta!

Atlanta Abuzz About aloft

As if Atlanta did not have enough amazing hotels either open or in the works, aloft hotels, a vision of W Hotels has plans for 4 new properties in Atlanta in the next few years. Properties have been announced in Savannah, Alpharetta and two in Atlanta, one Buckhead the other near Hartsfield - Jackson. The concept behind the brand is a smaller "little sister" of the hip W Hotel brand. The Buckhead location is the most fascinating with the location listed on the aloft website as "Intersection of Peachtree Road and Piedmont Road" and a scheduled opening of June 1, 2010. As it stands now there is no open land at that intersection though there has been talk that within the next few years the Rooms to Go will close, possibly leaving an opening for aloft. The aloft hotel brand was born in 2005 with the first hotel having just opened this past year in Rancho Cucamonga, California. Repeat Atlanta!

Verizon Wireless Moving Into New Orvis Shopping Center

With the recent relocation of Orvis to the new shopping center on the former Joe Muggs property, I began to wonder what else would follow. I have now learned that Verizon Wireless will open an outlet of their own in the space adjacent to Mattress Firm on the far right side of the center. The center seems to be doing quite well in a down economy in landing three major tenants, with limited space still available.
